FED:Katter party hits a road bump

Federal independent MP BOB KATTER says the rejection of his new political party's name
by federal authorities will not stop it from going ahead and an alternative will be found
soon.

The Australian Electoral Commission has rejected an application to have KATTER's Australian
Party registered as a federal political party, saying its abbreviated name - The Australian
Party - is likely to be confused with one already registered.

The party's Queensland leader, state MP AIDAN MCLINDON, says KAP's a likely alternative.

NSW:Shoppers embrace Zara with a frenzy

EDS: Reissuing, correcting timeline in second par

SYDNEY, April 20 AAP - A shopping frenzy normally reserved for Boxing Day sales has
marked the opening of Spanish retailer Zara in Sydney's Pitt Street mall.

The global fashion powerhouse, which prides itself on delivering top runway fashion
to racks within two weeks, opened its doors on Wednesday morning to mostly 20-something
women eager to update their winter wardrobes.

Hundreds of shoppers had a spring in their step as they made their way into the store
at 9am (AEST).

Within 10 minutes of opening security prevented additional people from going in, leaving
about 50 waiting outside.

Ashley Balmain from Adelaide was first in line.

A guest of the nearby Swiss Hotel, Ms Balmain arrived at 3.30am (AEST) to beat the rush.

"I come to Sydney once a year to do shopping," she said.

"Adelaide doesn't have much winter clothing."

At Zara she said she was hoping to find "good basics" including jackets, belts and gloves.

She was joined by Anna Barletta, from Sydney, two hours later.

Bridget Samara and Jennifer Ma got there about 6.30am (AEST).

Ms Samara said she had previously bought Zara in Italy.

"It's high fashion at an affordable price," she said.

She planned on spending about $1,000 at the store on Wednesday.

And she appeared to be sticking to her plan.

Within five minutes of the store opening she was spotted heading towards the change
room, arms laden down with garments.

Ms Ma was looking for a woollen coat. "You can get them here for $250," she said.

Australia is the 78th country to become home to Zara, which first opened in Spain in
1975 and is owned by Inditex.

A Melbourne store is due to open in June.

FED:No ministry for me, Oakeshott

CANBERRA, Aug 23 AAP - Independent MP Rob Oakeshott has laughed off suggestions he
has been offered a ministry in return for supporting a minority Labor government.

"Only very much jokingly, nothing formal," he told ABC Radio on Monday.

Mr Oakeshott is one of three independent MPs in parliament's lower house that Labor
and the coalition might need to win over to form Australia's first minority government
in 70 years.

"This is not about political parties any more," he said.

It was an opportunity for the 150 members of the lower house to consider all options
for a clear majority and a confident parliament for the next three years.

"If this stays about political parties, about an either-or choice about the red tribe
or the blue tribe it won't work and we will have to go back to the ballot box," Mr Oakeshott
said.

Now was not the time for "personal wants or wishes".

"This is not a time for offers."

Mr Oakeshott said he had spoken with Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader
Tony Abbott.

The independent MPS were trying to finalise a timetable for negotiations by the end
of Monday, he said.

But it could be two weeks before anything was clear.

AAP General News (Australia)

Fed: Lesser known battles remembered

By Max Blenkin, Defence Correspondent

CANBERRA, April 24 AAP - In 109 years of nationhood, Australian troops have been engaged
in warlike activities somewhere, in one form or another for roughly half that time.

Some are extremely well known - the Boer War, both world wars, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq
and now Afghanistan.

There have been numerous peacekeeping operations over the last 50 years.

And there were other, lesser known events.

Who has ever heard of Australian involvement in Russia as part of a British contingent
to support White Russian forces and crush the Bolshevik peril?

Up to 120 adventure-seeking Australian soldiers were recruited from the vast numbers
awaiting demobilisation in England at the conclusion of World War I.

A dozen nations joined this coalition which failed to rid the world of Bolshevism.

Two Australians - Corporal Arthur Sullivan and Sergeant Samuel Pearse - upheld the
finest digger traditions by winning Victoria Crosses for gallantry during the campaign.

Two other World War I incidents in Egypt show up another digger tradition.

They were the First Wassa on April 2, 1915 and second Wassa three months later. In
both incidents, Australian and New Zealand troops, well fuelled by strong drink and xenophobia,
set about levelling Cairo's brothel district, the Haret al Wassa.

Neither case was reported extensively back home. In any event, they were rapidly overtaken
by more heroic deeds on the Gallipoli peninsular.

Contributing to a rich tradition of indiscipline was Sapper James Devine, whose long
record of being absent without leave has earned him the description of being possibly
the worst soldier in the Australian Imperial Force.

His enduring contribution to Australian culture also came via his UK-born teen war
bride Tilly whose chain of brothels enlivened Sydney between the wars.

Alcohol also fuelled a World War II incident known as the battle of Brisbane on the
night of November 26-27, 1942.

This was essentially a vast street brawl between well-off American servicemen and resentful
Australians. One Australian was shot dead by an American military policeman.

The next night, the Aussies set out to even the score with random attacks on any hapless
American found on the streets. Similar incidents reportedly occurred in Melbourne, Sydney,
Perth and Rockhampton.

During World War II, Australians fought the Japanese, Germans, Italians and, on one
little known occasion, the French.

In June 1941, British and Australian troops were given the job of evicting the pro-German
Vichy administration from the French colonies of Syria and Lebanon.

It was hoped, forlornly, that French troops would be reluctant to fire on their former
allies and speedily surrender.

It's since been suggested that France may have taken much longer to fall had their
troops fought half as enthusiastically as those who opposed the allies in Syria and Lebanon
during this five-week campaign.

Former NSW governor Sir Roden Cutler won the VC and lost a leg during this campaign.

His VC citation makes no reference to the enemy being the French, although it does mention
the Foreign Legion.

In some of Australia's more recent missions, diggers are treading in the footsteps
of earlier Anzacs.

Army reservists now serving on the Solomon Islands may well only vaguely know of a
historic conflict.

In 1927, the Australian cruiser HMAS Adelaide sailed there in support of a British-led
punitive expedition to suppress a native rebellion prompted by the massacre of two British
tax collectors and members of their native police escort.

The rebellion was speedily put down with subsequent debate in Australia as to the usefulness
of the whole exercise.

In Iraq in April 1915, the 45-member detachment from the Australian Flying Corps conducted
Australia's first ever aviation combat deployment.

Flying the flimsy aircraft of the era, the Aussie pilots conducted reconnaissance and
dropped the occasional bomb in support of the British advance on Baghdad.

This was perhaps the most ineptly commanded campaign of British military history and
ended in complete disaster.

Only four of the nine Australians taken prisoner by Turkish forces survived captivity.

As last week's tragedy involving a fire aboard an asylum-seeker vessel demonstrates,
Australians are well used to the intrusion of foreign vessels, whether they be fishing
poachers, people smugglers or drug couriers.

In April 1937, the customs launch Larrakia bailed up a dozen Japanese pearl luggers
off the Northern Territory.

With a directness barely conceivable by today's standards, the captain fired some 1,000
rounds from a Vickers machine gun in a bid to halt the fleeing fleet.

No one was killed and no boat was damaged but he did succeed in detaining the intruders.

However, deficiencies in law at that time meant all he could do was take the names
of the vessel captains and issue them a stern warning to sail away and never return.

Fed: Apology to Aborigines is not enough: Germaine Greer

CANBERRA, Aug 14 AAP - The recent federal government apology to the stolen generation
does not go nearly far enough, provocative intellectual Germaine Greer says.

Years of ill treatment had been eating away at Aboriginal communities and threatened
their future, she told ABC Television last night.

"We're only on the edge of what we've done to these people, we have ripped away everything,
language, culture, land, self esteem," she said.

"You name any of the things that make you a human being and they have all been stripped away."

Professor Greer said she feared that it was already too late for many Aboriginal communities,
criticising the federal government's intervention in the Northern Territory.

She called for a treaty with Aboriginal Australia, and also suggested holding a conference
to explore how the rage within Aboriginal communities could be addressed.

White Australia had put Aborigines in "concentration camps", she said.

"In my worst moments I think that we might be way too late.

"They have been jerked from pillar to post ... they've ended up in one concentration
camp after another."

Professor Greer has penned an essay called On Rage which claims anger at systematic
ill treatment is eating away at Aboriginal communities and must be addressed.

"The rage is poisoning everyone," she said.

"It probably means annihilation of black communities, but there are some people who
will say to you that they are pretty well annihilated already."

NSW: Mother appeals for help to find screwdriver attacker

By Katelyn John

SYDNEY, April 19 AAP - A likely drug user threatened a baby with a screwdriver before
slamming his terrified mother's head against a tree and tipping over the pram in a daytime
robbery in Sydney's inner-west.

Natasha Walsh, 23, had just withdrawn money from an automatic teller machine (ATM)
and was walking her three-month-old son along a quiet street in Leichhardt when a man
with a striking red mohawk stopped her.

He demanded she hand over all her cash and belongings.

Ms Walsh said she quickly complied when she realised the man was pointing a screwdriver
at her baby, Joseph.

After she handed over her money, handbag and watch, the robber lifted the pram and
turned it over before grabbing the back of Ms Walsh's head and slamming it into a tree.

At that point, Ms Walsh said, she feared her son could have been dead, but he apparently
slept through the whole thing.

"I went to see if he was okay. I didn't know if his neck might have snapped or his
head had hit the concrete," she told reporters in Sydney today.

"He was asleep (but) afterwards I thought he might have been knocked out - I didn't
know if he was alive. I was really panicked."

Ms Walsh said that after the attack she went to the closest house and was taken in
by a family who called the police and helped with her baby.

She said she is now too scared to take her daily walk along Flood Street with her son,
and is dismayed that such a brutal attack could have happened in the quiet street in broad
daylight.

"It was very distressing to think somebody would try to harm my baby ...," Ms Walsh said.

"I hate him for what he did and for (potentially) hurting my baby even though he slept
through it all, he might not have ... It's disgusting.

Detective Inspector Peter Bailey said he believed the facial sores or blemishes on
her attacker's face and his conduct indicated he had a drug problem.

"Attacking a young woman and child ... on a public street, the sores on his face -
it's clearly an indication he's a drug user," Det Insp Bailey said.

Police today appealed for public help to find the offender.

They described him as being of Middle Eastern or Mediterranean appearance, aged in
his mid 20s, 188cm tall and of thin build.

He had black gelled-back hair with a red mohawk and was wearing a bright red jumper
at the time of the incident.

"Somebody must have some knowledge of this individual - of who he is, where he lives,
or they may of seen him in the vicinity," Det Insp Bailey said.

"He's striking in his appearance."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

About 290,000 Australians have baked in solariums during the past year, exposing themselves
to up to five times the UV radiation emitted from the midday sun.

Figures released by The Cancer Council of Australia also reveal women aged 25 to 44
are the most frequent users of solariums.

Chair of the national sun survey research committee, Professor DAVID HILL, says a solarium
increases exposure to UV radiation and the risk of skin cancer.

Cancer Council Australia figures indicate between 1992 and 2002 the number of solariums
in Victoria increased 600 per cent.

Legal Access Technologies Reports Revenue Increases for the 4th Quarter and the Year; Ohio Becomes the 9th State to Use Services.

Business & Technology Editors

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 22, 2002

Legal Access Technologies, Inc. (OTC BB: LATI), through its wholly owned subsidiary, Tele-Lawyer, Inc., a leading provider of web-based technologies and services to legal organizations, today announced results for the fiscal fourth quarter and year ended April 30, 2002.

Total revenue skyrocketed to $312,296 during the fourth quarter of fiscal year end 2002, compared with $27,442 in last year's fourth quarter. The company narrowed its fourth quarter net loss to $313,242, or $0.05 per basic and diluted share, compared with a net loss of $471,857, or $0.09 per basic and diluted share, in last year's fourth quarter.

Total revenue rose 57% to $655,508 for the full fiscal year ended 2002, compared with $417,334 in the prior year. Loss for the full year was $1,680,074, or $0.28 cents per basic and diluted share, compared with a loss of $1,324,534 or $0.25 cents per basic and diluted share, in the prior year.

Increases in total revenue for the fourth quarter and the year were attributable to an increase in sales of the company's new technology; these gains were offset by increased spending related to the aggressive expansion of operations and costs associated with the implementation of several new client contracts. The Company anticipates similar spending levels for the next several quarters as it continues to focus on software development and put in place a customer service and support team.

Michael Cane, CEO of Legal Access Technologies, commented, "The company has made great strides during this development year in which we have advanced our technology and started to aggressively implement our new business strategies. With the successful completion of our case management system for legal aids and the acquisition of the MyACD web-based phone system, our infrastructure is in place. We have started recognizing revenue from both the initial sale of our technology to legal aid groups.

"We are particularly excited by our successful penetration of the Ohio marketplace, where we recently signed contracts with the Legal Aid Society of Dayton and Northeast Legal Services, and are servicing 28 counties within the state. In addition, we signed a contract with The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and The Cumberlands during the fourth quarter. In fact, currently we have contracts signed to deliver services or products in 9 states: Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Kentucky, Tennessee and Kansas. Once launched and fully operational, we expect these projects to contribute significantly to revenues in the second half of fiscal year end 2003, and to yield profitability in the first half of fiscal year end 2004.

"Through continued investments in the development of our technology, we aim to further enhance existing offerings with the introduction of additional, cutting-edge products and services designed to reduce costs, enhance efficiencies and ultimately satisfy customer demands. At present, we are in negotiations with two leading technology providers that enables law firms to file documents directly to courts via the Internet, and we plan to pursue opportunities with several court systems to take advantage of this technology.

"As part of our growth strategy, we intend to expand our national geographic presence by targeting a broad base of legal services organizations within all 50 states. In time, it is our goal to have the first national unbundled legal services network designed to support the unmet legal needs of low to middle-income consumers, as well as a nationwide virtual law office to support the technology needs of practicing attorneys. We are confident that our relationships with legal services organizations will increase our visibility in the law community and drive additional customers to use our services when seeking legal assistance."

UniFirst Announces Financial Results for Fiscal 2000 First Quarter, Declares Dividends.

Business Editors

WILMINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 11, 2000

UniFirst Corporation (NYSE:UNF) today announced revenues and earnings for its fiscal 2000 first quarter, the thirteen weeks ended November 27, 1999, and declared quarterly cash dividends.

Revenues for the first quarter of fiscal 2000 were a record $131.8 million, a 13.3 percent increase from $116.3 million in the same period a year ago. First quarter net income was $5.5 million, or $0.28 per share, a 42.0 percent decrease from last year's $9.4 million, or $0.46 per share.

"Our revenue growth is encouraging" commented Ronald D. Croatti, UniFirst's President and Chief Executive Officer. "We continue to see improvement in our internal growth, which was 7.7 percent in this year's first quarter compared with 2.6 percent last year. The investments we've made in professional sales training, national, catalog and internet sales are beginning to pay off. As expected, our profits remain pressured as we continue to assimilate last year's acquisitions and deal with ongoing increases in labor, fuel and other operating costs. Beyond this, a major impact came from a comparative year-to-year increase in merchandise expense. In last year's first quarter we realized a benefit of approximately 3% of revenues compared to this year's first quarter due to a change we made in estimated lives for rental merchandise in service, from primarily 12 months to primarily 15 months. This benefit was absent in the fiscal 2000 first quarter."

The Company's Board of Directors declared regular quarterly cash dividends of $0.0375 per share (3.75 cents) on the Company's Common Stock and $0.03 per share (3.0 cents) on the Company's Class B Common Stock. Both dividends are payable on March 31, 2000, to shareholders of record on March 10, 2000. During the past year, the Company repurchased over a million shares of its common stock, underlining management's optimism about the future.

UniFirst is one of the largest providers of workplace uniforms and protective clothing in the United States. The Company employs 7,500 team partners who serve well over 100,000 customer locations in 45 states, Canada and Europe from 146 manufacturing, distribution and customer service facilities.

.ME Celebrates Exceptional Growth in Domain Registrations.

Domain Shows Three Times the Year-to-Year Growth of Many Other Top Level Domains

PODGORICA, Montenegro -- It's been three years since the .ME Registry first launched open registrations of the Montenegrin country code Top Level Domain on July 17, 2008. "In that time, the dot-ME domain has transitioned from one country's Web identity to the most effective personal domain name extension in the world," says Predrag Lesic, Executive Director of the .ME Registry. "Dot-ME has truly 'gone global,' having registered more than 530,000 domains in 200 countries."

Given the popular use of the word "me" in America, it may not be much of surprise to learn more than half (52.92%) of .ME registrations are based the United States; another 7.68% were originated by users in the United Kingdom. 3.82% were registered in Germany, 3.81% in Canada and 3.63% in Japan.

But, it is the percentage of .ME growth quarter-to-quarter and year-to-year that proves the domain is a consistent top choice among persons and companies looking to be sure their web address stands out from the crowd. During the Registry's last fiscal year (July 2010-June 2011), the registration of .ME domains grew by 27%; which, according to VeriSign's May 2011 Domain Name Industry Brief, is more than three times the average industry increase during the report's measured 12-month period (7.9%).

"While every Internet entrepreneur knows it takes time to build quality content behind any domain name, after only three years, there are many innovative online destinations and services with dot-ME extensions," adds Lesic.

One of those truly innovative online destinations is Internet celebrity and Go Daddy CEO and Founder Bob Parsons' popular video blog, BobParsons.Me. "My blog discusses topics I find interesting, so dot-Me makes sense," says Parsons. "The great thing about dot-Me is it gives individuals, many of which are business people, a place to register domain names for websites that communicate their personal ideas and interests."

Some of the most catchy and popular .ME domains include Formspring.Me, a site which allows anyone on the Web to ask you questions and provides a platform to answer them; About.Me, an easy-to-build customized personal webpage considered so innovative the start-up site was acquired by AOL from the founding venture capitalists just a week after its launch; and Blog.Me, the South Korean blogging platform with more than 27 million users.

.ME has also become extraordinarily popular recently for its value in the world of mobile apps and as a URL shortener for some of the world's biggest companies, such as Wordpress (WP.Me), Facebook (FB.Me), Yahoo (Me.Me), VKontakte (VK.Me) and Time Magazine (TI.Me).

"Some might argue that dot-ME has put the young country of Montenegro in a worldwide spotlight," notes Lesic. "We certainly are proud of dot-ME's international presence and of the Registry's accomplishments in successfully marketing the domain for its value, simplicity and brand presence online."

@BILLHASLAM FIRST TENNESSEE GOVERNOR TO ENGAGE PUBLIC VIA SOCIAL MEDIA.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The following information was released by the State of Tennessee:

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam is the first governor in the state's history to fully incorporate social media sites into his public outreach efforts and push state departments to aggressively engage the public through these online tools. The governor highlighted these efforts during remarks at the Tennessee Digital Government Summit in Nashville.

Haslam's online presence includes: 40,042 Facebook supporters; 8,388 Twitter followers; 1,072 LinkedIn connections; 17,305 YouTube views; 97,302 Flickr views; and 94,021 visits to tn.gov/governor since his inauguration.

As more and more Tennesseans turn to the internet for information, the Haslam administration's growing social media presence offers the general public additional outlets to participate in public discourse or access information about state government.

"Social media offers powerful tools that invite the public in and promote discussion," Haslam said. "Using these outlets, we can communicate directly with the online citizen about his or her state government in an environment where it is as easy as a click of the mouse to share information with family and friends."

Haslam and his communications office use Facebook and LinkedIn to network with Tennesseans while also using the governor's Twitter feed, Flickr photostream and his YouTube channel as other methods beyond speeches, appearances, news shows, interviews and press releases to communicate with the public.

State departments are also taking greater advantage of the opportunities social media presents with nearly all departments working to increase their online presence beyond the state's homepage of www.tn.gov.

"Civic engagement is critical to a healthy democracy, and increasing the state's online presence offers Tennesseans more alternatives to join the discussion on how to make our state a better place to live, work and play," Haslam added.

-Ancestry.com chief voices support for IT IPOs.

CORPORATE IT UPDATE-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

6 June 2011 - Tim Sullivan, chief executive of Ancestry.com (NASDAQ:ACOM), said that although only a small number of Internet groups were set for big initial public offerings (IPOs), the successful ones had the chance to make huge gains, the Financial Times reported.

Sullivan said that Zynga, Groupon, Facebook and LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD) were all leaders in their respective markets, and that not all social media companies should expect to have the same market success.

He said also that it was unwise to call the current investment situation a "bubble", because in contrast with the dotcom bubble in the 1990s, now most of the current candidates for an IPO had well-functioning business models.

Sullivan warned that Internet companies from emerging countries tended to be more overvalued.

In its latest quarter, Ancestry.com saw its subscriber base expand 33% on the year and revenues go up 41%. Profits came to USD9m (EUR6m) on revenues of USD91m. The company's share value has almost tripled from an IPO price of USD14.20 to USD40.13 on Friday.

ITI PRESIDENT AND CEO DEAN GARFIELD: INTERNATIONAL CYBERSECURITY EFFORTS KEY TO ECONOMIC REVITALIZATION.

WASHINGTON -- The following information was released by the Information Technology Industry Council:

Dean Garfield, president and CEO of the Information Technology Industry Council, released the following statement in response to the White House's release of its international cybersecurity strategy:

"ITI strongly commends the framework put forward by the White House today. This new international cybersecurity strategy, which balances our economic goals with our diplomatic and national security priorities, is the correct path forward to help keep the U.S. competitive worldwide while also contributing directly to our long-term economic recovery.

"In their attempts to secure digital infrastructure, a growing number of governments worldwide are enacting cybersecurity-related laws, regulations, and other requirements that are inconsistent with generally accepted norms and standards. The negative consequences are vast. This growing policy patchwork not only results in decreased security for nations, but also disrupts global commerce and ignores the borderless nature of the Internet.

"To date, the international community has lacked the collective willingness to engage in a meaningful conversation on the need for a global approach. Far too often, nations fail to align laws and requirements in a manner that recognizes that this issue is no longer just a matter of Internet security, but also one of economic prosperity. The current economic landscape highlights the urgency to address this head on.

"U.S. leadership is critical to reaching a consensus solution. Again, I strongly commend the Obama Administration for committing the resources and political capital needed to promote U.S. competitiveness and innovation. Our industry looks forward to lending the ideas and best practices of the private sector as this process moves forward. Together, we can make our worldwide networks safer and more secure while also contributing to the strength and well-being of the global economy. It's both an immediate and win-win opportunity."

Efforts aimed at economyAEs long-term health.

Summary: Obama on Saturday sought to reassure Americans that heAEs concentrating on jobs, while defending his administrationAEs efforts to strengthen the economy on several fronts.

"In the coming days, I'll be unveiling additional ideas aimed at accelerating job growth and hiring as we emerge from this economic storm," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address. "And so that we don't face another crisis like this again, I'm determined to meet our responsibility to do what we know will strengthen our economy in the long run."

Obama said he has no intention of backing off his administration's efforts to overhaul health care, improve education, invest in a clean energy economy and deal with mounting federal debts.

But he acknowledged the pain felt by millions of the unemployed.

Job losses in the U.S. have been the worst since the 1930s, but new statistics out Friday showed a relatively moderate loss of 11,000 jobs last month. The unemployment rate dipped from 10.2 percent in October to 10 percent in November.

Obama has faced criticism for tackling various problems simultaneously while the unemployment rate has been growing. He said the economy is turning around, even if slowly.

Americans "are in a very different place than we were when 2009 began," Obama said. He cited economic recovery efforts as part of the reason "we're no longer facing the potential collapse of our financial system or a second Great Depression. We're no longer losing jobs at a rate of 700,000 a month. And our economy's growing for the first time in a year."

"But for those who were laid off last month and the millions of Americans who have lost their jobs in this recession, a good trend isn't good enough," he said.

In a speech Tuesday, Obama plans to send Congress an initial list of ideas he supports for a jobs bill that could include new hiring incentives for business, home weatherization projects and the construction of roads and bridges.

Rising anger over joblessness threatens the president's agenda. Obama held a jobs forum at the White House on Thursday, made a trip Friday to visit business owners, workers and the unemployed in Allentown, Pa., and set the jobs-bill speech for next week. The president must connect with voters to boost the chances of his legislative efforts and for Democrats in the 2010 midterm elections and his own in 2012.

"The folks who have been looking for work without any luck for months and, in some cases, years, can't wait any longer," he said. "For them, I'm determined to do everything I can to accelerate our progress so we're actually adding jobs again."

While pledging to work hard on creating more jobs, Obama said he plans to continue his efforts to deal with the country's pressing long-term problems.

"I didn't run for president to pass emergency recovery programs or to bail out banks or to shore up auto companies," he said. "I didn't run for president simply to manage the crisis of the moment while kicking our most pressing problems down the road."

Bisys unit tests check image service on Net.(Document Solutions Inc., Internet)(Brief Article)

Document Solutions Inc. is about to test a service that lets businesses and consumers view images of paid checks on the Internet

The unit of Bisys Group, Hackensack, N.J., provides check imaging software to about 700 community banks. The on-line service, to be called InterCheck, is in the final stages of 18 months of development, officials said. The company said an unidentified ban k will begin testing next month.

Robert Woods, product director at Document Solutions, noted the "solid need in the corporate world for this type of service," and added, "any customer could have access to their checks."

He foresees customers visiting their banks' home pages, then keying in account numbers and passwords to view their checks. Customers would link to Document Solutions' Web-based servers through secure gateways.

The company will use search criteria to locate any check on a given bank's check processing storage system, where it would be stored for up to 90 days.

A growing number of banks, including Banc One Corp. and Chase Manhattan Corp., are looking to the Internet to post checks on-line, typically for corporate services for check fraud prevention.

Lawrence Forman of Ernst & Young, New York, said the service would "make sense" for corporate customers but questioned the need for consumers. "It's very interesting and sexy," he said, but perhaps an example of "overkill."

comScore Reports the Number of Auto Insurance Policies Purchased Online Exceeded 2 Million in 2007.

Consumers Submitted Requests for Over 32 Million Rate Quotes Online

RESTON, Va., March 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- comScore, Inc. , a leader in measuring the digital world, today released a study of online activity for the auto insurance market in 2007. The results show that consumers submitted requests for 32 million online quotes and purchased a record 2 million policies online in 2007. The number of quotes requested online increased by 15 percent, and the number of auto insurance policies purchased online increased by 37 percent from 2006 to 2007. It's clear that the Internet has become an important factor in the auto insurance industry during the past few years, with consumers requesting more than 100 million auto insurance rate quotes between 2004 and 2007.

Consumers originally turned to the Internet to educate themselves about auto insurance and compare prices but were slow to begin completing the purchase transaction online. Beginning in 2006, however, the industry experienced a shift in consumer behavior, resulting in an increase in the number of policies purchased online.

"Consumers are demanding the freedom to choose their method for interacting with their auto insurer -- whether online, by phone, or in person," said Kevin Levitt, comScore vice president. "The rapid growth of the Internet demonstrates the importance of a multi-channel approach that includes the ability to request quotes, purchase policies and service accounts online."

Growth in Customer E-Servicing Yields Cost-Savings to Auto Insurers

In addition to online customer acquisition, the auto insurance industry experienced growth in online policy and account management. E-servicing is particularly appealing to both insurers and consumers because it represents potential time- and cost-saving opportunities.

To evaluate consumer changes in e-servicing, the study compared the number of e-servicing visits to seven leading auto insurer sites in 2007 versus 2006. Total e-servicing visits grew by 15 percent, with the increase driven by a 20-percent increase in visits to policy management sections of the sites, indicating consumers' growing comfort with completing more complex transactions -- such as adding cars to policies -- online.

"Consumers appreciate the freedom and flexibility of being able to manage their policies online," continued Mr. Levitt. "Meanwhile, insurers benefit by reducing costs incurred in their offline channels and communicating more effectively and efficiently with consumers, thereby enhancing the lifetime value of the relationship."
